According to new research, UK tradesmen believe that they are gaining more work due to Britain’s fondness for DIY.
A study made up of 100 tradespeople across the UK reported that plumbers had to fix the most DIY bodge jobs. 20% stated that disastrous bodge jobs accounted for around 84% of their work. Not only that, but 50% of plumbers also felt that DIY jobs were becoming more and more popular, almost like a trend.
100% of those surveyed though felt that most DIY attempts made by homeowners were due to people believing it would be cheaper to do the jobs themselves. Not only that, but 42.9% felt that homeowners attempted jobs themselves because they believed skilled plumbing jobs were ‘easy’. Another 42% also believed that homeowners feared that they would get ripped off by a rogue tradesman. Therefore, they attempted to do the work themselves.
25% of plumbers though stated they were often called to fix DIY disasters in businesses. However, 100% agreed that those who made these DIY mistakes were putting themselves and others at risk.
“Although these jobs might be good news for UK plumbers, businesses need to be aware that cutting costs by attempting to do the job of a professional is a false economy, often costing a lot more than it would to pay a professional to do the job in the first place.”
This was according to Alistair Denness for Swinton Commercial, the business insurance broker who conducted the study.
“Business owners also need to remember that failed DIY attempts can put you and employees at serious risk.”
