For some reason, DIY is one of the firm favourite things for British people to do when they have time off from work. However, the likelihood is, if they do it themselves, then something is going to go wrong.
According to a recent survey, 48% of British people think they’re good at DIY work. However, 33% of respondents admitted that they had suffered a do it yourself disaster too. Almost one fifth of DIYers had done such a bodge job, that they even had to pay over £500 to get it fixed!
When looking at areas in the UK though, Leeds, Bristol and Manchester were found to be the most prone areas for do it yourself disasters. When looking further north though, Scotland appeared to love doing DIY, with a whopping 88% happy to complete work themselves, instead of hiring a professional. Once again though, some of these homeowners had also suffered DIY disasters. Some even managed to set things on fire!
There may be hope though! Just over a quarter of British people stated that they “wouldn’t even dream of taking on a large DIY project themselves.” However, a further 39% still felt it was a good idea to do the work themselves.
40% admitted though that they wouldn’t give DIY another go after trying and, well, failing.

However, DIY bodge jobs may not always be a bad thing. Instead, they could be key for tradesman as according to alternative research, 80% of work is due to dodgy do it yourself jobs. Take a look at the full report here.
