Think asbestos is a past problem? Think again!
According to a recent study, asbestos is still a danger on today’s sites with almost one in four construction workers believing that they have come into contact with the deadly substance. In fact, according to the survey of five hundred workers, a third have never checked the asbestos register before working on a new site.
This is despite knowing that half a million buildings could potentially contain the material.
Overall, Asbestos exposure is responsible for 5,000 deaths every year in the UK. And, UK workers have the greatest risk of dying from Mesothelioma. A deadly cancer that is related to the material.
In fact, alternate research has found that twenty workers die from Asbestos every single week! And that’s not all. The research also found that workers could be coming into contact with the substance more than 100 times a year. Take a look at the full report on this here.
Alongside this, one in five also admitted that if they came across the deadly material, they wouldn’t be clear on what they needed to do either.
The UK’s chair of Industrial Injuries Advisory Council described that this is “deeply worrying”.
“What these new survey results confirm is that, while people have heard of asbestos and know what the effects of being exposed to it are, they’re not sure how to check if it’s present and they may not know what to do if they find asbestos.”
The president of the company added that it is unacceptable for anyone in any workplace to be exposed to Asbestos.
He continued: “In the decades to come, it is likely that these people and their families will still be suffering unless we all do something about it.”
