According to a recent study, one in five homeowners blame issues such as dripping taps and faulty electrics on the supernatural.

The study, which was made up of more than 2,000 UK homeowners, found that 18% of people blamed their DIY problems on supernatural beings. A further 25% though weren’t too sure whether the issues were caused by ghosts or faulty DIY. However, they did claim that the issues were still ‘spooky’.

Instead of calling in a professional though, it was found that 35% of people simply left the issues alone. More than likely, allowing them to get even worse. And, 1.5% even admitted turning to an exorcist for help!

For tradesmen, DIY fails were found to make up 80% of their work. Skilled in fixing these issues, 100% of workers felt that DIY mistakes put both homeowners and others at risk. Take a look at the full report here.

For homeowners though, these issues were found to cause real problems with 9% wanting to leave their home until the issue was fixed. Alongside this, a further 18% admitted that they, and their pets, became very nervous due to the problem. And, 4% couldn’t even sleep!

More than half of homeowners confirmed that their suspicions were supernatural though instead of needing the attention of a tradesperson. 54% admitted that they had seen/felt a ghost in their home.

CEO of HomeServe Membership, who commissioned the study, stated: “The results of this study are certainly hair-raising!”

“It’s fascinating that so many people blame simple household problems on the supernatural or unexplained.”

“So often we find that’s not the case and it’s usually much easier to fix.”

“We know that many common household problems – broken boilers, blocked drains, cold patches in our homes – can be a personal nightmare when they strike.”

“But our ghostbusting engineers usually have the answers and can keep people’s lives moving after a quick visit.”
