Hello and welcome to this week’s episode of ‘Quids In’, our weekly Facebook Live show!

But wait what’s this? That’s not Andy? And everything is a different way round! Yep, we shook things up this week by going vertical. And, with Andy off on holiday, it was time for our favourite host Dan to take over for this Band of Builder’s special.

But who are Band of Builders? And why was this week all about them? Well, they are a community of like-minded construction industry volunteers from all trades and backgrounds sharing the same vision: to provide practical assistance to members of the UK construction industry and their families when faced with life-changing conditions.

Doing incredible work, these incredible tradespeople also sponsored this week’s show and gave our audience the chance to win over £1,175 worth of prizes! But first, it was time to kick things off with some news headlines.

News Headlines!

4.8 million self-employed workers won’t be able to retire until they’re 79!

Are you putting away enough money for when you get old? Well, apparently many of you aren’t…

A report has recently looked at more than 1,000 self-employed workers aged between 25 and 40. And, for most of them, at their current saving rate, they would be working more than a decade later than the national retirement age. So, if you’re self-employed and haven’t started saving for your retirement, get putting some money away as the average person expects they’ll need over 32 grand a year for their retirement. So get saving!

Speaking of saving, it was now time for our first giveaway, courtesy of Band of Builders. Thanks to them, we were giving away a Metabo PowerMaxx BS Basic Set, 2x 2.0 Ah Li-ion batteries and an LED torch worth £120! And to be in with a chance of winning, all our audience had to do was guess the correct number between one and twelve. This week it was the lucky number… 12.

Now to talk more about Band of Builders. Everyone involved is connected through a shared desire to help people. They look after their own, supporting each other through good and bad times. Let’s hear it for Band of Builders!

But wait, no one picked twelve! And, for the first time in Quids In history, we had to do a redraw! And this time, our lucky winner had to pick the number… SIX!

And with a winner finally chosen, it was now time for the next part of our show, caption this!

Caption This!

This is the part of the show where the audience can get involved and caption the picture shown on the screen. This week, the image showed a Makita radio strapped into the car with a seat belt. And, as it was an image of a radio in a car seat, Dan went for the belter of a caption: ‘radio gaga!’

But now, it was up to our audience to beat that caption and win themselves an OTT hoodie.

Speaking of winning, it was now time for our second competition, wheel of fortune. Thanks to Band of Builders, we were giving away three GPS tool trackers worth £267 and a BOB clothing voucher worth £50. All our audience had to do to be in with a chance of winning these prizes was guess the correct number between one and twelve. And, this week, it was the lucky number… TWO!

Two competitions down and two more to go, this officially marked the halfway part of the show. But what’s next I hear you ask? Well, it’s time for top tips.

Top Tips!

Tip 1: Save up to £900 with your partner!

Valentine’s day was yesterday so, in the spirit of things, we thought we’d spread the love and give you a tip for all the couples out there.

You can get a free £900 tax break if you’ve put a ring on it (or have been given one)! In fact, if you were lucky enough to get engaged yesterday then you could be looking at saving some money through your tax. About one million married couples are missing out on an easy but under-publicised tax break. It’s worth £238 this tax year, and as you can claim for the past three years, it could be worth up to £900 in total!

So, take a look at the Money Saving Expert marriage tax allowance guide here for more info! And you never know, you could be… Quids In!

Speaking of which, it was now time for our third competition, blindfold darts. And thanks to Band of Builders we were giving away a Dewalt Drill Set worth £329.99! Heading over to the Blindfold Darts Arena, Joe was with Alice who was blindfolded and ready to throw her darts. And, this week, he landed the lucky number… FOUR!

With three done, we just had one more competition to go. But first, shoutouts!

Shoutouts!

This is the part of the show where our audience can get involved live on air and bag themselves a shoutout. Not only that, but we also honour our hero of the week too. Here, we talk about a tradesman who has gone above and beyond in the industry.

In honour of Band of Builders, our nominated heroes of the week today were volunteers Dan Harris and Adam Callow who have put themselves forward for a tough 2019. They are taking part in a series of fundraising challenges including an MMA event and a Tough Mudder throughout the whole year to raise money for Band of Builders.

We wanted to honour them for all of the incredible work and support they contribute to Band of Builders. We salute you!

Not only that, but we also provided our audience with the chance to be a hero too. How? By supporting the Band of Builders. Every contribution matters, not just the hours of free time, the gifting of materials/equipment or large donations. So, if you want to donate then show your support here.

They recognise the hundreds of other small things that the public do. From fundraising challenges, sponsorship, merchandise that is purchased and proudly worn, the kind donations of food, accommodation, cups of tea and beers! They celebrate all of this publicly, no act of support is ever too small.

Before Dan could discuss this anymore though, the competition claxon sounded again for our final competition. And, thanks to the fantastic people at Band of Builders we were giving away a fantastic Bosch 10.8v 5 piece set and a Bosch Soundboxx Radio worth a total of £409!

To be in with a chance of winning it, all our audience had to do was guess how many tea bags our man Joe could throw into the oversized cup. And, in the end, with a rocky start, he managed to land a dismal… two!

Unfortunately though, with this competition over, it now meant that our show had come to an end. All that was left to do now was say thank you to everyone who tuned in and a massive thank you to our fantastic sponsor’s Band of Builders! See you next time!
