Hello and welcome to this week’s episode of Quids In, our weekly Facebook Live show! In this, we aim to keep more money in the pockets of UK tradespeople. And, this week it’s a Mates in Mind special.
Alongside this, we’ve also got news, industry advice and thousands of pounds worth of prizes to give away! But before we get into it all, let’s take a look at our news stories for the week.
Gary Smith has recently won his case with Pimlico Plumbers with the Supreme Court siding his favour that he was, in fact, an employee. He was required to use the company van for jobs, had to wear a uniform and work a minimum number of hours each week – without any of the perks of being on the books! But still, the company claimed the worker was self-employed.
Luckily though, the plumber won the case in the Supreme Court, a landmark case for all self-employed workers!
Builders have been protesting the safety rules that ban shorts on site by wearing skirts! With Britain facing what is one of the hottest summers we’ve had in a long time, many construction workers have been suffering as a result of health and safety rules. With temperatures climbing and even reaching highs of 26˚c, it’s not surprising that one set of bricklayers have decided to ditch the dress code for skirts and dresses instead.
In fact, Andy added: “Personally I think that this is a genius idea, and to be honest it’s a bit warm in here today.” As the camera pans down, we also saw Andy clad in a very fetching skirt too. Get those legs out Andy!
Before we could admire Andy’s skirt anymore though, the competition claxon sounded for our first giveaway: cement mixer lottery! Here, we were giving away some Telescopic Ladders worth £80. And to be in with a chance of winning them, all our audience had to do was guess the number… ONE!
With one competition down though, it was now time for our next segment: Question Time.
This is the part of the show where we answer the burning questions of UK construction. And, this week, our first question was, “why are England so sh*t at football?”
To this, Andy responded: “Because, apart from the odd freak occurrences (e.g. ’66, ’90 and ’96), we always have been really.”
“We didn’t even qualify in ’74, ’78 or ’94!”
“But, things could be a lot, lot worse… we could be Scotland!”
“So what I say is, let’s get behind the boys, enjoy it whilst it lasts and see what happens this year!”
Top answer Andy! Next up, he had the question, “I’m going to be starting my plumbing apprenticeship in September, what tools should I buy?”
To this, Andy gave a belter of a response: “A kettle should do you for the first six months!”
But, before Andy could crack any more jokes though, the competition claxon sounded once again and it was time for the wheel of fortune. This time, thanks to our friends at Mates In Mind, our audience had the chance to win a Rawlplug Nail Gun worth over £300! And to be in with a chance of winning it, all they had to do was pick the correct number between 1 and 12. This week it was number… SEVEN!
But, that’s not all, that was just the second of our four competitions. So, on with the show. And next up was top tips!
At the end of the day, or the month, or even the year… we all want more money! Everything seems to be getting more expensive and let’s face it, we’re not going to win the lottery anytime soon. So here’s this week’s tips.
Tip 1: Fuel price hikes! Yep, the price of fuel is on the rise, again. But, did you know that there is a website called petrolprices.com where if you sign up and enter your postcode and how far you’re willing to travel then it’ll give you regularly updated pump prices for FREE!
Tip 2: Tesco Direct website is closing down! Yes, mammoth retailer Tesco Direct is closing down its online store. Now, this may be sad to think of at first but wait, this means they’re also having a closing down sale!
It will run until the site closes on 9th July, so why not grab yourself a bargain? You might even be able to get a deal on a new TV to watch the World Cup on! And with closing down sale prices, you’ll definitely be QUIDS IN!
Speaking of which, it’s time for another competition and the chance to win some more free tools! This time, we headed over to Scott at the Blindfold Darts Arena where he and Mat were ready to play some blindfold darts. This time, thanks to our friends at Mates In Mind, our audience was playing for another set of Telescopic Ladders worth £80 and some On The Tools merch! And to be in with a chance of winning them, all they had to do was guess the number… 18!
Three competitions down and just one more to go, it was now time for our shoutout section of the show.
Here, we give our audience the chance to take part in the show by getting themselves a shoutout. Alongside this, we also honour our hero of the week too. This is where we salute a member of the industry for their incredible work.
And, this week, we honoured the incredible Mates In Mind. They are doing a fantastic job to raise the profile of mental health awareness in construction. There are some shocking statistics associated with the industry and suicide.
To highlight the work Mates In Mind do, we spoke to Russell Stilwell, Managing Director of RSE Building Services who, unfortunately, lost his best friend. This, of course, had a great impact on Russell, but with a business to run, he just kept telling himself to “man up and get on with it”.
He described: “The Mates In Mind initiative, there’s potentially a need for the liked of it across all industries to enable the removal of the stigma associated with mental health and mental illness.”
“I think if we as an industry could start to focus on that, it will preventatively change the statistics that currently exist.”
“If you are under a tremendous amount of pressure and you are feeling low and you are feeling unwell, find the right person to talk to.”
“And, if you can’t find the right person to talk to, don’t be scared to pick up the phone to one of the helplines and talk to them.”
“It’s in confidence and it’s there to help.”
“It’s there to assist and it’s there to try and provide the good advice that it does.”
Great words there! We salute you Mates In Mind! If you need support, please, don’t be afraid to ask. Check them out here.
With our show almost over, there was time for just one more competition, another spin of the wheel. And, we were giving away another Rawplug Nail Gun worth £300! To be in with a chance of winning it, all our audience had to do was pick the correct number between 1 and 12. And, this week, it was the number… EIGHT!
And that marked the end of our fourth ever episode of Quids In. All that was left to do now was to give a massive thanks to our friends at Mates In Mind for sponsoring another great show and everyone who took part. See you next time!
