New Year’s resolutions have been around for a long time and most people take part in the tradition. Some, make half hearted resolutions they have no intention of keeping. Others, well, they take them seriously and actually achieve their goals throughout the year. It’s all about making them realistic. So here are the ten typical resolutions that people tend to give up on by the middle of January!

1. Join a gym. Gym’s get such a surge of people joining in January the joining fee’s probably last them all year. Now this, is an expensive resolution to make if you’re not going to stick to it. Gym memberships can be really expensive, and we all know that years down the line you’ll still be paying for it. Trust me, I know, I’m still paying for mine and I haven’t been in almost two years!

2. Go on a diet. That resolution is basically setting yourself up for failure. You’re going to stray at some point. Instead, make a more feasible resolution. For example, instead try and eat healthier for your own health benefits. This can be a lifetime goal then so you don’t have to get down to a strict weight in a strict time period.

3. Spend more time with family and friends. If you think you’re an unsociable person then don’t make this resolution. You won’t keep it. You’ll end up sitting at home with a beer watching a box set, the same thing you do every Friday night. Not only that, but everyone spends so much of their time going to work, doing jobs, raising the kids, that not a lot of people have the time or energy to do that anyway. So you deserve to have a chill with a beer and a box set.

4. Stop being so stressed. Now this is a difficult one. Stress is a part of life. It’s impossible to get rid of every means of stress. Some stress is good. It motivates you in life. Therefore, all you can try and do is learn to manage the negative stress in your life, better.

5. Get organised. Everyone want’s to be more organised. And if you’re not organised by this point then chances are you never will be. But if you are committed to doing this, try and do it in stages. What needs organising first? Your van? Your home? You decide.

6. Stop drinking or smoking. These are two deep habits that will be difficult to get rid of. It’s always a good idea to quit to improve your mental and physical health. But you don’t need a January resolution to start.

7. Getting your finances in order. A very vague resolution. This could mean anything, from earning more money, to saving a bit more from month to month. Either way, you’ll need a structured plan involved or the chances are you’re going to slip up.

8. Travel more. Now this one is more down to work. At the end of the day, if you only get a limited amount of time off work, this one is unlikely to be realistic. If you have the time and the money though, this is a great resolution which allows you to explore all the different corners of the earth.

9. Change your job. A resolution made by a lot of people because they don’t like going to work. But it’s easier said than done. There’s a lot to consider when switching jobs. Do you have the skills? Would you be prepared to relocate? Would you be comfortable with taking a pay cut? Are you willing to risk your current security? Overall, it’s likely to be a long, stressful period of your life. But hey, it could be worth it in the end.

10. Do volunteer/charity work. Now this one is easy to say, but less easy to action. It’s one of those resolutions that people tend to save for ‘another day.’ Basically, they never end up doing it. If you do want to help others though then it’s probably best to start sooner rather than later. Why don’t you try and help out in the community or support your local charity? A little can go a long way.
