With the General Election less than a month away we’ve looked at the manifestos of the major parties and how they could effect the UK construction industry.

Kicking things off with the policies and promises surrounding housing:

New Housing Supply:

Conservatives
200k New Starter Homes by 2020
20% discount for first-time buyers
Release of Public Land for the building of 150k homes

Labour
Target set for 200k new homes by 2020
Simplified planning rules for small housing developments
‘Use it or lose it’ powers for councils to stop developers from ‘hoarding’ land

Liberal Democrats
Appoint a ministerial taskforce aiming to build 300k new homes by 2020
Will publish plans for at least 10 new ‘garden cities’

UKIP
Would encourage small-scale developments of up to 12 units
‘Local people’ given the veto over large scale developments

Social Housing:

Conservatives
Have cut funding for Social Housing increasing registered social landlord’s reliance on private capital and higher affordable rents

Labour
‘A key priority for additional capital investment’

Liberal Democrats
Councils will be able to suspend ‘right to buy’

UKIP
No major policies on this subject
