According to recent research, tradespeople are found to be one of the most intimidating professions to customers.

The trades, including electricians and plumbers, ranked third with 59% of respondents finding them fearful/intimidating. Further research supports this too with 87% of homeowner revealing that they fear hiring a tradesman. Take a look at the full results here. They fell behind those in the financial services (e.g. accountants), and those working in hospitality (68%).

In contrast to this though, doctors, nurses and those working in healthcare are the most likeable of professions. Next, was teachers and those working in education. 69% of respondents felt they were the most trusted profession. And in third place was the emergency services.

The UK’s Most Feared Professions

1. Hospitality (e.g. chefs, bartenders, waiters/waitresses) 68%
2. Financial Services (e.g. accountants, traders) 64%
3. Trades (e.g. electricians, plumbers, construction workers) 59%
4. IT and Telecommunications (e.g. call centre workers) 55%
5. Transport (e.g. airline workers) 53%

The UK’s Most Likeable Professions

1. Healthcare (e.g. nurses, doctor) 73%
2. Education (e.g. teachers) 69%
3. Emergency services (e.g. ambulance service, fire service, police) 64%
4. Legal (e.g.lawyers) 62%
5. Marketing 60%

The marketing director at Fletcher’s Solicitors stated: “It’s surprising to see that such a customer-facing profession such as the hospitality trade is the most feared amongst the British public.”

“Perhaps those who work in industries that provide care and support such as health and education could teach others how to improve their delivery and customer handling skills.”

“We regularly see the likes of Gordon Ramsay and his fiery temper on television programmes and it seems it is indicative of a wider trend across the industry.”

“When selling a product or service there must be a general level of approachability between provider and client and the customer should feel at ease, whether at a restaurant dining table or providing customer services.”

“An anxious or stressed client can also lead to miscommunications and even in some cases problems such as medical negligence.”

Despite being the most feared profession though, alternate research has found that tradespeople are one of the most trustworthy. Take a look at the full results here.
