It’s time for another On The Tools awards, honouring the UK’s tradespeople. But, before we can get to that point, we need your help first. We need you lot to decide our winners! So, today, we’ve got two great bricklayers for you to choose from. And we need you lot to decide who will win the ‘Bricklayer of the Year’ award, sponsored by Wienerberger.

So, let’s meet our shortlist!

First up, we have Kevin Robertson.

Kevin has been on the same site for Barratt Homes and Highland Gate for over 3 years. In his time there, the site has won the NHBC Pride in Job Award along with a Seal of Excellence. This has never happened in Scotland before either, on any site, so this is something Kevin is really proud of.

Not only that, but in the last 2 years, Kevin has also trained an apprentice who has won the Apprentice of the Year award with Barratt Homes West. This truly does show Kevin’s influence! Overall, he is truly passionate about his job and the industry and would love to take this award home!

Joining Kevin on the shortlist is fellow bricklayer Richie Maxwell.

After Richie won at last years awards, he has been using his status to give back. Taking part in various charity events, he even worked on the first ever Band of Builders Scotland project. Working with his local churches, he is also helping with their repairs and rebuilds competing in a charity ice hockey match and boxing event.

Continuing to keep a high standard of work too, Richie also passes on his knowledge to younger tradespeople and apprentices.

He described, “I have done this my whole life and truly have a passion for all aspects of the trade.”

“I’ve never been unhappy with my career choice and go to work every day thinking today will be the best day yet.”

“I started out in the trade because of my father, who has since passed since I won Britain’s Top Tradesperson, so it makes going to work that much more enjoyable because I think of everything he has done for me, taught me and inspired me to do to get me to where I am today.”

“It made us have a special bond, so every day when I go on a job I get to think of him and our special relationship.”
