One builder recently got the shock of a lifetime as he unearthed a hand grenade whilst working on a housing development in Kent.
The contractor reacted as many of us probably would do when discovering something like this. He tried to get as far away from it as possible. So, impulsively the builder threw the grenade which landed on the nearby railway tracks.
Luckily, the grenade did not detonate and nobody was hurt.
A large emergency response was prompted though with police cordoning off the area to the public and a bomb disposal team were called to the scene. A spokesperson for the British Transport Police described: “Officers were called to Whitstable station following reports of a suspected explosive item being found on the rail track.”
“The call came into police at 8.25am.”
“Building contractors came across the device, and in their panic, threw it onto the railway line.”
“Builders at the scene said they dug it up on a shovel and flung it near the tracks, but it did not land on the line.”
“Officers attended the scene alongside colleagues from Kent Police.”
“The object has been recovered and is believed to be a World War Two ordnance device.”
“Trains are running as normal.”
The worker added: “Never seen a hand grenade before but not it’s unusual to find bombs, wells and sometimes dead bodies when doing groundwork.”
This year, an unexploded WW2 bomb was even found in the Birmingham area. It caused traffic chaos and an army bomb squad were called out to the site. Take a look at the full report here.
As the worker said though, you can find all sorts of things on site. Sometimes these things can be weird, wonderful and downright creepy. Take a look at some of the strangest things found on site here.
