Recently, an elderly disabled couple were scammed by a rogue tradesman. They paid a ‘tradesman’ £13,000 to fit their new kitchen. But what they were left with, was far from the new kitchen Malcolm Arnott dreamed for his wife.
He purchased the new kitchen for his wife’s birthday. He then, hired a tradesman to fit the kitchen and a new bathroom. However, this rogue trader soon left the home in an unfinished state, disappeared without a trace.
The electrics were of a poor standard and there were holes in the wall. It was completely unliveable. Sixty year old Mrs Arnott was completely stranded. Her husband, Malcolm, no longer lived at the family home. Instead, he was living in a care home after his spinal cancer had left him paralysed. So Mrs Arnott was completely alone living in these conditions.
One builder heard their story though. And he wanted to help.
Ernie Etah heard their story on BBC radio. He himself had suffered paralysis too after a serious accident. This further encouraged his desire to help. When Ernie arrived at the home, he described it as a “fire hazard”, “unsafe” and “uninhabitable.”
He continued, “in the bathroom there was a massive hole that you could actually near enough see the footings in – we expected the rats to start coming in there.”
But Ernie Etah was able to provide the Arnott couple with a safer, habitable home. He completed all of the work for free and they couldn’t be happier with his work.
Mr Arnott described: “it’s more than you can dream of – far, far more than I expected.”
“In this day and age, when it’s dog eat dog, to find a company like this is just amazing.”
