It’s Friday. It’s 12:15 pm and it’s time for a very special edition of Quids In. This week, we supported Suicide Prevention Day which took place on Monday to raise awareness of men’s mental health and encourage our viewers to speak out.

Like always, we had plenty of prizes to give away but we also had a slightly serious tone to the show as well. Mental health is a real issue that needs to be spoken about more, especially in the construction industry and that’s why we decided to support Suicide Prevention Day with this special episode of Quids In.

Suicide actually kills more construction workers than falls! Therefore, we wanted to do what we could to get the construction industry talking about mental health and wellbeing within the industry. For more information on the subject and the charities involved such as ‘Mates in Mind’, please click here.

Or, you can get in touch with the Samaritans. You can talk to them any time you like, in your own way, about whatever’s getting to you. Every 6 seconds someone rings the Samaritans and one conversation can truly turn your life around. Don’t be afraid to ask for help!

News Headlines!

We began the show in our classic style though with some news headlines. First up we had: ‘Brexit set to boost wages for construction workers by 11%!’

Recent research has found that leaving the EU could spell good news for tradespeople, but why is that? Well, the study found that companies and firms are actually looking to reduce the need to rely on international workers. And, with places like London revealing that over half of the construction workforce consists of migrant workers, employers are now turning to homegrown talent. And, we all know more demand means more money!

So looks like you lot could soon be… QUIDS IN!

Construction workers are six times more likely to die from suicide than a fall from height!

A truly shocking statistic! In reality, suicide is the biggest killer in men under 50 and in the UK, someone takes their own life every two hours! Even when just looking at the industry, the statistics are shocking. In fact, construction has the highest suicide rate of any other profession.

It was at this point though that the competition claxon sounded for our first competition. But, before Andy went on to this, he wanted to address the viewers directly about mental health. If you may be struggling then there will be links throughout to charities such as our friends at Mates in Mind. They’ll be highlighted in yellow. Please, if you’re struggling, speak out.

But it was now time for our first competition, Cement Mixer Lottery. Here, we were giving our audience the chance to win some Powerfix Telescopic ladders worth £80. For indoor and outdoor use with soft close technology to avoid trapped fingers, these ladders expand to 343cm and fold down to just 85cm! Plus, all our audience had to do to be in with a chance of winning them was guess the number… 4!

With our first competition won, it was now time to move onto our second segment of the show, caption this!

Caption This!

The aim of the game here is for our audience to simply caption the image they see on the screen. Easy! Plus, if they come up with a belter of a caption, they could even win an OTT hoodie!

This week, the image showed a tradesman using wads of £50 notes as knee pads. To this, Andy went with the classic ‘sparkie kneepads’. But, before Andy could come up with any more, which knowing his track record would have been a lot worse, the competition claxon sounded again for our second competition, Wheel of Fortune.

Here, our audience had the chance to win a Karcher Pressure Washer worth £90! The K2750 Telescopic Pressure Washer has a maximum pressure of 110 bar and flow rate of 280 litres per hour. It’ll make short work of cleaning the winner’s outdoor furniture, greenhouse, car, caravan and patio for sure. And, to be in with a chance of winning, all the audience needed to do was guess the number…10!

With two competitions down though, we were now officially halfway through our show. But, what’s next I hear you ask? Well, it can only be one thing. It’s time for top tips!

Top Tips!

This is the part of the show where we try and help UK tradespeople keep more money in their pockets. By using these top tips, we hope that people will manage to stay… QUIDS IN! And, today, we’ve got a cheeky THREE tips for you.

Tip 1: Free MOT at Halfords with any purchase. So, in theory, you could spend £1 on an air freshener and get yourself a free MOT! To qualify though, you need to make sure you make your purchase between the 10th of September and the 14th of October and register your details. After that, you’ll be sent a voucher and you’ll have until the 31st of October 2019 to claim your free MOT! So, if your car or van isn’t up for an MOT yet, but you want to take advantage of this offer, don’t worry, you’ve got plenty of time.

Tip 2: £200 cash for free when you switch banks. HSBC have revived their advance account for those looking to switch banks. Within this, you get £150 upfront then another £50 after a year, if you stay with the bank and register for online banking, As always when it comes to free stuff though, there are some catches! So check the details before you sign up, but on the face of it, you could be…QUIDS IN

Tip 3: National finish at 4 pm day! It’s not really a money saver to be honest if anything, it could cost you some money but either way, we thought we’d let you know that today is national 4 pm finish day. We’ll be waiting at the door at 3:59 pm for that bad boy that’s for sure. So if you’re grafting away make sure you let the boss know about this one!

Before Andy could say any more about his early finish though, the competition claxon sounded for Blindfold Darts. Heading over to the Blindfold Darts Arena, Scott was with Adam who was back and blindfolded ready to throw his darts. This time, our audience had the chance to win a Ring Video doorbell worth £90.

With this, our winner could watch over their home in crystal-clear 1080HD video. Not only that, but they could also see, hear and speak to visitors from anywhere. With instant mobile alerts and two-way talk as well, they’ll be able to answer the door from their smartphone, tablet and PC as well. But what number did our lucky winner need to pick? Seven!

Three competitions won, and with just one more competition to go, it was now time for the next part of our show… shoutouts!

This is where our audience has the chance to get involved live on air and bag themselves a shoutout. Not only that, but we also honour our hero of the week too. Here, we talk about a tradesperson who has gone above and beyond in the industry.

This week though, we didn’t just talk about one hero but FIVE: Danny Hobb, Jay Walker, John Mottershead, Angelo Shanahan and Nick Broomhead!

Over the last year, they have lost three close friends to suicide. And, after losing their second and third friend, Danny decided he wanted to raise some awareness about this issue. So, with his friends, they’ve teamed up with the charity CALM who is leading a movement against suicide in young men.

Doing a walk from Rhyl to Salford in 24hrs, they now have a team of 50 people taking part with a support team to help them along the way. They are set to do this walk on 20th October and will be the hardest physical challenge many of them will face. They have been training hard and have a target of £50k to raise before the event. So, check out their Facebook page or head over to their JustGiving to see if you can help out.

But, before Andy could talk about things any further, the competition claxon sounded again and it was time for our final competition… another spin of the wheel!

This time, our audience had the chance to win a Graco Ultra Corded airless Sprayer worth a massive £400! What a whopper of a prize! And, to be in with a chance of winning it, all our audience had to do was guess the number… 12!

And that was it, the end of our show. All that was left to say now was a massive thank you to everyone who took part and don’t forget, for more info on World Suicide Prevention day, check out our friends at Mates In Mind, the Samaritans and CALM. It’s ok not to be ok.
